Concept to design development, I assisted with the design of the overall site plan and design and documentation of the villas for Shangri-la Villingili Resort. The main design goal for the villas was to have a cohesive language but also a distinct character that related to the unique siting in the resort. The over water villas, beach villas, and treehouse villas use the same material palette but are expressed architecturally in visually identifying ways.
Opened in 2009.
The resort was designed to be a world-class all-villa development organised into separate villages to create distinct areas reflecting the character of each part of the site. The Shangri-La Maldives Resort & Spa captures the spirit of the site; it is modern in reflecting current technology yet exhibits continuity with the heritage of the past and responds to the tropical climate and landscape of the region by promoting positive indoor and outdoor experiences. Care has been taken to pay homage to the identity of the island - specifically her wildlife and flora. Forms and spaces, both natural and controlled, celebrate the unique energies of the three village experiences; Lost Horizon, Whispering Palms and Windance.
